Christians - some questions....

I am not a Christian, but my mother is and recently started asking why I don't believe in (the Christian) god. "For reasons too numerous to mention"... I told her, but honestly it's got a lot to do with my perception of Christianity.
So I was wondering about some aspects of Christianity that I don't understand and wondered if anyone out there could answer some questions for me.
For example, I have had a christian friend who once did me a nasty turn tell me afterwards, "well god forgives me" in place of doing anything to actually make amends with me. I have noticed that for some christians this seems to make any wrong they do ok, regardless of anything else they might do
And I don't understand why is seems to be so central to christian belief that you believe that people are fundementally bad and sinners and only through god can you be redeemed. I don't consider myself a sinner.
And why is it so important to so many christians to make sure that everyone beleives what they do?
