Im going to be getting some work done on my house over the comming months and I started to phone around for a contractor to do this late last week. It will be a big job as Im remodelling downstairs knocking walls, new kitchen, fireplace doors porch conservatory etc...and Im having some work done upstairs and both front and back gardens paved. I rang about ten companies that looked reputable and got mostly message minders or secretaries who took my number. Not one rang me back. Whats going on.
It will be a big job so worthwhile for someone but so far I cant get anyone to even give me a quote.
Dont these people want the work.?

Yes I have heard that it is quite hard to secure a building contractor. Basically the reason is that they prefer commercial work as it pays a lot better being much bigger jobs. I can only sympathise, the only real advice I can give is to ask your friends, for the reasons that if you get a recommendation you are more likely to get someone reliable. If you cold call someone you are going to be charged lots more.
My husband's friend is getting an extension on his house at the moment, it is gone over the 200k mark at this point as they have changed their mind on a number of things.
I will need to get one also as my house is tiny, I just hope there is more availability of contractors by then.

I also heard they prefer to do commercial or new projects. Remodeling always leads to the unexpected. We've done it ourselves enough at our house. There never use to be a square corner in this place.

Wow I am very surprised. When I was looking to get my roof done, I called a few places and every one called me back, most within a few hours, and they were here to give me estimates, free samples and coupons. Hopefully someone will get back to you really soon and you'll be able to get your work completed.

I am going through a similar situation right now. My home is in need of repairs to the drywall downstairs, bathroom vanity needs to be replaced, kitchen cabinets need new frames, and all of my flooring downstairs needs to be repltimaced due to irresponsible subcontractors. The walls are going to be painted as well. I have contacted one contractor so far and he has not called me back yet. My neighbor also has damage and is still waiting for her contractor to call her back. It seems like nobody wants to do any work. I already showed my contractor the estimate so not sure why he has not responded. Will be making some calls tomorrow.

Around here, so much building is being done it's very difficult to get a contractor to come quickly. They are very backlogged, and all the good ones are basically scheduled.
The people who I know whom are contractors are contractors because they are good at building, not because they are good at running a business. So I can see why you might not be getting responses, if your city is as busy.

its the same i ireland. you cant get anyone to do anything . if they do agree to do the job then you have to wait until they are good and ready to start it. often they start the job , then leave for several weeks . this means noone else can come in and take the job . rats.

No one wants to get their hands dirty anymore, and that includes contractors and plumbers. Quality, experienced, knowledgeable contractors are difficult to find. And, there is a huge shortage bubble approaching in the future.
As the shortage creates a void, it is soon filled with poor quality workers, or even just plain scam artists.
A very large percentage of contractors are really not qualified or experienced carpenters or construction workers. They do some demolition, and possibly quick shabby reinstall so you cannot see how poorly the work was done. They really just want your cash and leave as fast as possible.
Good contactors are easiest to get if it is new construction, or total gut and rebuild. When working on an existing home, there are always unforeseen problems. Contractor usually end up trying to make best possible repairs to the previous shabby work, and it reflects badly on them. Plus, the homeowner is never happy with the additional costs.
Plus, just like you or me, contractors do better work when not being watched, or clocked, or questioned, by homeowners. But that is when you are lucky to have hired quality contractor.
Ask some friends and coworkers who does quality work in your area. Watch locally for their trucks or vans at construction sites. It soon becomes easy to identify which contractors you really want.
Don't even consider hiring someone just because he is available. That is really a sign you don't want him.
Then be prepared to wait. A good contractor has jobs lined up for the next six months, or more. The bigger your project, the longer you will need to wait.
However, if you have some smaller, indoor projects, these can sometimes be squeezed in, as when the contractors' larger outdoor project has a few rainy days. That is, if you have good attitude.
There is an upside to all of this. After you have used a contractor, and cooperated with reasonable minor problems, or delays, or interruptions, this same contractor will be surprisingly available to you later on.
Later, whether you want another project done, or if an emergency arises, the contractor will fit you in. If you were reasonable and pleasant about the few times he was interrupted by emergency calls somewhere else, your emergency calls will be returned.
There are many, many more of "us" than of "them". Good contractors can pick and choose which jobs they want to accept.
You can have two factors:
Good
Fast
Low Cost
Yes, you can pick two, but you will forfeit the third.
I would always recomend that you make sure that Good is one of your choices.
And I cannot stress highly enough, attitude is everything. These contractors work for themselves, and plenty of work is available to them. Use a common sense, joint venture, partnership, cooperative attitude. If you have a superior, I am paying you, demanding attitude, a good contractor will not be able to fit you into his schedule.
No one wants to get their hands dirty anymore. And there is a serious shortage of new, young plumbers.

That is surprising!! Isnt that the trend now is people loves money very much and became a workaholic because they want to have more and more money? I dont understand why no one called you back for work! Could it be that this a busy time and many people are renovating or something and then no one call back because they think they wont be able to take the job anyway? Or maybe the operator doesnt pass on the message to the right person so that no one really handle it? I suggest you find other companies that are willing and eager to do the work. Or either you could also swallow your pride and call again and say that you have called several days ago etc and let them know that you will appreaciate if someone call back to discuss about the job. or maybe when calling you should let them know that it is quite a big job etc.
good luck

Are you in the UK? I know several people who would love to quote you for the work. My partner is a builder and so are most of his friends!

Wow...that's amazing...It could be that they are already booked? I would just keep trying...I know it is frustrating..but you need to find someone credible too for your own sake..so maybe this is a good thing to weed out the ones that may not be suitable...

I have and continue to have the same trouble...last year I wanted to replace the windows and doors, the siding and take down 2 old brick chimneys in our house, I called every single contractor in the yellow pages and of all of them I had one that actually came and had a look at what I wanted done. He then told me that it would cost to much to have the work I wanted done, and that he would not do it, first off none of the other contractors called me back, and the one that actually showed up said this, so I asked him, who is paying for the work....and I told him that I didn't ask him how much it would cost, only if he could do the job, then I told him that even though he was the only contractor I could get he wasn't getting the job. I don't know whether they didn't need the work or what but this is a year later and not one single contracto called me back, so next year I will do the work myself, I will hire a couple friends to give me a hand and together we will get done what needs to be done, and not one of the contractors will get a penny ot a good word from me again. I am capable of doing all the work myself but I just don not have the time, and this was why I wanted to hire the work out, but in the end with the time I wasted on trying to get a contractor I could have had half of the work done myself.

Best thing to do is look online through the BBB ( better business bural- I think I spelt that right ). They should be able to help you find a contractor that won't screw you over. And plus be able to find one that will actually do the job that you want done.
I have a friend, her husband is a contractor, but they live in Florida. I have seen pictures of houses that her husband has done that they own. And honestly, I wish I live closer to them so I can get him to do some work for me.
Sad to say, People want money but are not all that willing to work for it.
Good luck with finding someone.

It's not that they don't want the work teenal. It's that they have too MUCH work. They can pick and choose work to suit them now. I've just spoken to my husband about this - (he's in the trade), and he reckons that a complete remodelling job would be a big Health & Safety issue for a lot of companies and they won't want to touch it unless you're moving out of the house.
By the way, we're trying to put in a new kitchen at the moment. The first company we got a quote from told us they couldn't put it in for at least eight weeks. :O

It happens at times when you need the most, you can't locate anyone anyone deserving. It does not indicate that people do not want to work anymore. It is a matter of contact. Keep on trying and soon you will find some quote.

You know I think it has a lot to do with the ssia's maturing, My partner is inundated with work now due to this, But he always will look at work or at least return phone calls, this is how business works, I'm quite stunned at how these "reputable" companies haven't done so.
Are you prepared for the mess?? I wasn't but that's because my partner was off doing his own jobs around doing our house, We knocked walls put in a new fire place built an extension on the back and put a new kitchen in, we put arched doors through out the house and we also did the back garden too, You seem to be doing pretty much what we did last summer and I wish you the best of luck, it's so hard with young kids. and maybe harder when its your partner doing the work.
If you need any numbers for different guys (if your gonna go the direct labour route) , builders, plasterers, plumbers etc just pm me and I'll past whatever I have to you, these will only be guys who's work we know.

I think all the reputed companies act the same way as you say they think that they are great and the people come in search of them and they wait us to call for and they doesn't know when they were new we are the one who made them famous by giving a reputation to them I think the normal companies do the better job than them nowadays for less amount what they quote.

It is possible that if they were not in the office that they were out on a job somewhere else . I am sure you will get a call back . But it is annoying when you are trying to reach someone and you can't . With so much technology out there today , you are more likely to end up with a voice message or some other computer program talking to you . This works as an advantage and a disadvantage depending on what you are looking for at the time .
Best of luck getting someone .

I wonder if there is a website out there that compares contractor's quotes? I used a moving website once where I typed in my info (filled out a form where I estimated the amount of furniture, boxes, any special/heavy objects, etc) and got quotes from 6 different movers. They either emailed me or called me. I wonder if there is a contractor site out there like this? If not, maybe there should be! It would make them more competitive with each other and responsive!!
