I personally think that it depends on what kind of mental illness, next it also depends on the stage that they are at. The media exaggarte many citzens opinion on the mentally ill. Which makes everyone think that all mentally ill people are dangerous. This statement is false. If sentenced to jail, their mental stage would only get worst, due to the lack of knowlegde that most officers don't know how to treat them. Leaving them in isolation would only progress their illness. If they were commited to a hospital they would be give proper treatment that would help them recover soon. This would be the best solution for them, family and communities.

yeah i totally agree with you , , i do not think that putting mentally ill people into jail is a nice idea , , i mean , , they are mentally ill , , they do not know what they are doing , , why should they be punished for something that they do not have any idea that what they have done was wrong , , well, , there are mental hospitals there that will help them , , coz' as what you have said , , their illness will just get worse if they do not get the treatment that they deserve , ,

For me, either way, getting locked up at a jail or hospital is the same. Hospitals can give the mentally ill proper treatment, but they still are limited to their moves like in jails.
