I have a 1 yr and 3mos baby girl and eversince she was born I used to buy her books eventhough she can't read yet. But now, at 1yr and 3mos when i read to her she usually wounds up tearing the books apart. When she's calm and in the mood i only get 5minutes of her undivided attention, she do listen to storytelling and enjoys what she sees in the book like colorful drawings and all but after that 5minutes she will usually throw the book. I wanna instill in her the habit of reading. I do admit that i haven't been able to read to her at night before she goes to sleep but i do read to her before nap time and during her playtime. Do you think its better to read to a toddler before letting her sleep at night? Is pop up book much better than the thick one?

My son loved when I read to him at this age. But we really didn't read. We had Richard Scarey books. For 15 months, I would recommend board books and to work on the word No. Tell her to make nice to the books, not tear them. 'Pat the bunny' was also very popular. We would look at animals - point at the animals and make the appropriate animal sound. We had a lot of books that required interaction.

she's into dancing and singing more than books now... everytime she hears music she would automatically dance and sing, her version. i haven't tried animal books maybe she will respond to it better than letters and numbers.. thanks deb

i think you are rushing her into reading. i'm sure she'll have plenty of books to read later in life. i feel you should wait for her to be nearly 3 yrs old to enjoy and comprehend what you read out to her. an year-old child can only appreciate visual stuff. she definitely will like colorful pictures....but it will take time before she begins to understand th eimportance of words written on it. pop up book is a good idea though.
