Video Game Cosole Wars: Why so much hate?

I have noticed that online there's a lot of animosity about which console is best. I personally think it's cool that there are a lots of choices out there. I don't understand why so many people are taking it personally when someone criticizes their favorite machine, or praises one they despise. Why can't all the fanboys and girls just get along? Is it all just teenagers doing this, or are there older gamers out there who are just as ready to flame the competition? It's such a waste of energy to get that worked up over a game.
