I think Mickey's first name was Mortimer Mouse and Walt Disney's wife didn't like that name, so she suggested Mickey Mouse.

wouldn't think anyone as young as you would know the answer to this question. must say my hats off to ya. but you only gave half of the answer so need to find another source to help you a bit. Mortimer Mouse is correct but wasn't changed because of Walt's wife.

I have been to Disney near Orlando, Florida with my family but I also remember watching a TV show about Walt Disney so that's how I remembered Mickey's first name being Mortimer. I thought on the show they had mentioned something about Walt Disney's wife not liking the name Mortimer so I am curious of why they changed it. Thank you for your kind words--I am just a youngster at heart!

Before the answer I actually knew I had heard this somewhere and I also knew the name Mortimer. I did not however know why it changed. I always thought Walt named the mouse Mortimer from the mouse in his studio and after the animators were finished with the mouse, Walt Disney felt his actions were like a relative and he named Mickey after his relative. But I can see from looking it up, which I am sure what most people did, that his wife named the mouse Mickey or rather conviced walt to change his name from Mortemir to Mickey. But isn't there a Mortimer in one of the cartoons Walt disney created?

Actually, this is a common myth. Mickey's name has always been Mickey. He became famous because of the animated film Steamboat Willie, so often his name is mistaken as that. However, he had been in two little cartoons before hand, and was named Mickey since creation, decided by Disneys wife, who disliked his idea of Mortimer Mouse. He was created as a replacement for Oswald the Rabbit, after he lost the property rights to that cartoon. This is all verifiable if you check it up through sources. Check wikipedia .. just search Mickey Mouse.

don't want to fight but i've watched the original Mortimer mouse cartoon and yes said Mortimer they then changed it to Mickey. Mortimer is from the silent area of cartoons in 1928 Mickey came in at 1930 for the talking cartoons. His wife then had him change it not just because she didn't like it but also because not to many 3 year olds could say it. have to read all the stories online to dig this information up for sure. instead of Mickey check Mortimer Mouse same site. Thank you very much...
