This is a very interesting topic that many people are not very educated in at all. My four year old did not get one himself, but his 7 year old brother did for Christmas. He does play with it though, and seems to enjoy it. If you buy age appropriate games and limit the usage each day, there is nothing wrong with them owning one. Technology is not a bad thing, it is teaching our children at much younger ages and it helps there eye and hand coordination and problem solving skills. Children learn much better at an early age, so I would suggest getting her something like the Nintendo DS and buying only educational and age appropriate games. Then only allow her to play an hour or two a day, and on longer car trips (which is a god send for the parent as well!). My children have actually benefited from it, with increased self esteem and learning new skills all the time! The V-Tech mobile is another kid friendly option that is less likely to break and offers many educational options.

The only problem I would have with getting her one, is that her two year old sister would want one too. She has a wonderful computer made by V-Tech that is age appropriate for her and her sister and teaches them counting, matching, the alphabet, etc. I think they will just have to stick with that for now.

WOW that seems so young, but she must be very smart to know what it is. I think technology is great for everyone. It depends on how we dole it out to tour kids. We control how much they absorb and what part of technology they get to use and for how long. The computer was the best thing in the world for my son. He was diagnosed with ADHD and had some behavior and socializing problems. I was so glad when I was able to get a computer and what his brain go. He could stay focused a few minutes on one thing, but the grat thing about a computer is you can do a lot of things at once. I think technology is helping us all!

I don't think technology hurts children. Too much of these games would really hurt them as too much of something is not good. These new technology are just modern versions of old things. The ipod was once the radio and the Nintendo could be the family computer. They are just signs of progress I guess. These technology may change but our values are still the same. If we still teach children and guide them in whatever they do, they will do very well I think.
