Did you always have asthma, or did it suddenly come?

I never had hay fever as a kid, nor any allergies to anything. Then suddenly when I was 20yo and 6 months pregnant with my first kid I woke up gasping for breath and have had asthma ever since. Been on everything from steriods to Advair and Albuterol.

I did not have asthma all my life, but when I was six months old I was in the hospital for a week with pnumonia and I have had weak lungs every since. I had my first ever attack when I was 15, I was playing mini golf with my friends and all of the sudden I couldn't breath, it was like sipping though a straw. However I had had a sinus infection for a while that was finally clearing up and the doctor said that coupled with my weak lungs probably triggered the asthma. So that doesn't explain really why you suddenly woke up with it...did the pregnancy cause it? I don't know but I do think it's strange for an adult to just suddenly wake up with asthma. I think advair has worked the best so far in the last 6 years I have had asthma.

Yep, I woke up one morning and couldn't breath. Felt like you described, sucking through a straw. Absolutly gasping. Had to go to the ER where they gave me a breathing treatment and steriods. It had to have been the scariest feeling in the world!

i already have my asthma since i was a kid, before im not using any inhaler whenever i have asthma, just onyly deep breathing.. it becomes worst when i i turn 12 years old and i was cleaning at the room and suddenly my asthma attack, and cant breath anymore so my parents decided me to bring in the hospitalk and they treated me for only just a minute by nebulizer and the doctor gave me prescriptions to take inhalers.. since that time i started to have my inhaler with me.. when i was in higshchool i have my asthma once a year, and when i enter my college days whenever im stress my asthma attack me.till now, i really dont know whats the best medicine for this to heal forever.

Stress and dust do it for me. If I'm cleaning I have to take breaks, especially if there's a lot of dust involved. And I always carry my inhaler around with me. Even the thought that I might need it, but can't find it is enough to set my asthma off sometimes.

The same thing happened to me. Except I was nine months pregnant and had pnemonia too! I was put into the hospital for a week my oxygen levels were so low. I didn't even know that I had asthma til the doctors told me and then I told them they were crazy that I never had it before. After the pregnancy things should return to normal at least mine did. Good Luck!

I've had asthma my whole life. My triggers are mostly things I'm allergic to, such as dogs. If I get an upper respitory infection, that will always make my asthma flair up. Oddly, I had about 12 years where my asthma was pretty much gone. Then I got a bad allergic reaction one christmas eve, and ended up in the ER on Christmas Day (fun!) because I couldn't get it to stop. Since then I've used inhalers and a nebulizer (same thing medicine as inhalers, delivered differenly). I've tried Advair, but it always gives me a thrush infection. Really, for me, the most effective thing is to just stay away from my triggers. Easier said than done sometimes, but I try.
