Is this okay with you? Do you think that the government should be able to tell you what you get to spend your money on??? I'm truly interested to hear what people have to say on this subject.

First it should be clarified that the bill passed last fall does not make online gambling illegal, it just makes it illegal for the sites to offer online gambling to residents of the US, and it makes it illegal for eWallets and banks and whatnot to transfer money to and from online gambling sites. The act makes nothing illegal for the player. That having been said, it's really a state-by-state thing with online gambling, with some states laws being in a gray area and with some other states (like Washington state) explicitly making it illegal. I'm personally opposed to the act.

Thank you for responding and shedding more light on the subject. I know that it has several other countries in an uproar also as they can't deposit and cash-out because of not being able to send the money through their choice of pay. My understanding is that their is a big conference that either just ended or is getting ready to end with the online gaming sites, I think in London. Waiting to hear what they have to say. Good luck here on mylot.

Yeah, there's a lot of talk going on, especially on the Internet, by people who really have no clue. The Twoplustwo legislation forum is the best place to go to learn about this topic.

Online gambling is probably more dangerous than going to the racetrack or casino. The latter are social occasions, and usually don't let people gamble on credit card. Online gambling does depend on credit cards, and you sometimes hear of children getting into it too (something impossible in the traditional gambling venues)

Thank you for your response. I have gambled online and am in no way afraid to step into a casino. I found it convenient to gamble online when a babysitter wasn't available, after the children have gone to bed, for me a release or relaxation if you will. Very good point that you make about keeping the money in the US, again though when you win big here in the US Uncle Sam is there with his hand out. Good luck to you here at mylot!

i disagree. i think most people that play online poker, dont really have the nerve to set foot into a casino and play poker with real people. i think if the government really wanted to make more money from taxing poker, they would allow poker sites that are based in the US, which are currently illegal. i personally think it was because there was a lot of money leaving the US, that was the strategy behind passing this bill. just my opinion though.

I think it is wrong. It is just another way of controling us and trying to get more money.

I think it's an absolute joke. They have a problem with online gambling but no problem having a lottery for every day of the week (off of which they make billions). They have got to catch up with the times (as well as a number of European countries)and legalise online sportsbook to allow them to operate in the US and pay the appropriate taxes

The biggest issue that I see that they have is they want their share of taxes from it. I guess we just wait and see what happens over the next few months. :)

I personally think the US government is retarded most the time. Online gambling is fine, as long as its controlled.

I am glad that the government banned online gambling. It was getting out of control.People get addicted bad and lose homes, marriages, etc.Although I don't think that gambling shoud be banned altogether,I do think people should only be allowed to gambel so much then be stopped.People don't have the sense to to know when to stop!

I thank you for your response and your opinion on this topic. I don't think that it should be banned because people can't control themselves. If they don't have the sense to know when to quit, that isn't really my problem and I don't think that things that I enjoy doing have to be taken away because of that. While I agree that anything not done in moderation can become an addiction, it shouldn't be banned just for that reason. This is just my 2 cents worth. :)

No it not ok. i dont gamble online but still i dont think the Government shouldnt have any say in it. The government has no right or no business telling us what we could do and how to spend money. It our choice and some things government needs to butt out for once and quit trying dictate us how to live!

Well the government controls gambling anyways, always has. Remember the Gaming Commission in each state? There are regulations on it because of how it has to be taxed and how it is easy to avoid that taxing. So its not really any new kind of government interference, its a state tax thing.

Thank you for your response. That is exactly why the government wants the control they want the tax money that they currently aren't receiving from online casinos. :) Just my opinion. Good luck to you here at mylot!

Why should our governemt be able to say what we can spend our money on? We earned that right by going to work every day. To me it's like the governemt telling us we can't spank our kids. THATS NOT THEIR DESCISION! That is up to the individual. Period.

Thank you for your response and my sentiments exactly. I don't believe that the government should be able to tell me where I get to spend my money. The only reason that they want control is for the tax dollars they are currently not getting from online gambling. Good luck to you here at mylot!

Unfortunately, there's more to it than the government just wanting to control what we spend money on. Most of the popular on-line gambling websites are actually located overseas.. and on-line gambling sites are an excellent way to launder money. I think that has a lot to do with it.

Thank you for your response. That could be haven't thought of that. It isn't in the chat room that I frequent, it is mostly about the government wanting their fair share. But you make a good point. Good luck to you here at mylot!
