Eficient way to stop the bleeding?

Somethimes when I shave, it happens, that I cut myself, and it starts to bleed - you all know guys, what I am talking about....
20 minutes ago I accidentaly cut my finger with a metal plate, and it started to bleed.
So my question is: what is the most eficient way to stop this?
I have seen that cold water somethimes does work.
I am waiting for your advices.

If the cut is on the front of your finger, try pressure between the cut and the knuckle closer than the cut to the rest of your hand. For future use I suggest taking a good Vitamin C Supplement. Vitamin K is a good choice, also, unless you have a clotting problem.
