What is the Song "Come Together" About?

ok, according to my husband's lyric book called "the beatles illustrated lyrics" edited by alan aldridge there is a quote from john regarding this song - "This is another of my favourites. It was intended as a campaign song at first, but it never turned out that way." so according to john (and don't ever let yoko speak for john) it's a political thing..maybe it's just the guy has leoprasy or something like that? or he's just one cool dude...
