I have seen many discussions here in mylot and I would like to know from you guys if what is your basis for making a discussion. Is it based on your personal experiences, others experiences, from your readings or others not mentioned here? Honestly, I have a difficult time starting a new discussion because I feel that the topic was already started so I am asking you an advice or opinion on how you start your discussions.
Tips from you will be greatly appreciated.

I usually try to start a discussion on something that I am knowledgeable about; something that is different from other posts. I use my personal experiences, things I have learned, and things I am just curious about. I think it is just personal preference.

Hello there! My discussions are from personal experiences. I also get a lot of funny emails from my friends, so once in a while I'll include some of those for a laugh. I find it difficult to start new discussions that are interesting. Sorry I can't give you any tips - but things from personal experience are good.

I can only speak for myself although in the near past i haven't been that active in starting new discussions, i was concentrating my efforts on responding to other members discussions.
...
I start new discussions based on my previous personal / professional exeperiences or if i have any curiosity regarding a certain problem.
Sometimes i relate to a somehow controversial subject from media.
Best of luck and keep up the good work!

There are many factors involved in the start of a new discussions. Sometimes, I'd check the search engine to see if similar topics already existed. If so, how can I rephrase my discussion on the same topic and see other slants of responses.
I normally organise my potential topics offline. In this way, I will always have a pool of topics and not have any stress at all.

i find it hard to start discussions. so when a thought or an interesting experience comes along, that's what i write about. i also start discussions that i am familiar with, or about stuff that i want answered or cleared.

I haven't started very many discussions at all, generally I'd much prefer to respond to someone else.
Having said that the few I've started are just things that popped into my head. I have in the past tried to come up with something interesting and or different and in all honesty I think it's a case of trying too hard so nothing comes. But when I'm not thinking about it sometimes a question will pop into my head that I'd like a genuine answer to or I'll see or read someting interesting that seems to naturally form into a discussion.
I guess that doesn't help much - perhaps like me you're trying too hard, maybe just stop thinking about it and seein g what happens.
