A new law has been passed in Bangor, Maine, banning smoking of anything in any vehicle with a person under 18 years of age. It is subject to a $50.00 fine and was upgraded from a secondary offense (meaning the policeman could not stop them unless they had done something else wrong) to a primary offense (meaning the police can stop any vehicle with children in it where they see smoking taking place for no other reason) and it was upgraded by a smoker, who said secondary offenses were not worth the paper they were written on and a person smoking in a vehilce with children may as well be trying to kill the child outright. The law is only within the city limits but several other cities are already considering the smoking ban. Do you hope it takes off and covers the whole world? I do! I don't think anyone should smoke around children. The smoker's rights should end where other's rights begin!

kudos for that, The fine should be set higher. The world doesn't need smoker that endanger the life of others. Inhaling of second hand smoke is very dangerous and it can lead to many health problem. I know that it is hard to quit smoking but atleast be considerate and smoke in designated places. Smoking in confine places such as car is just simply killing other non smoker. If I were government I will set more rules and policy about smoking in public and also creating quiting program to help the smoker that willing to stop. I do not hope that the future generation is inhaling the second hand smoke or worst smoking.

I believe that law went into affect statewide here in California awhile back. I agree with the law 100%. I'm a smoker and I never smoke in the car with our children nor my home and am put out when I have visited people in the past that do smoke in there home when they have children, and tend not to return to their homes as I don't want to subject my children to it. I think that it is a shame that laws have to be put in place for the basic common sense and health of our children. That is my two cents! Good luck to you here at mylot!

It's terrible that we have to resort to this. You would think that people wouldn't want to expose their children to second hand smoke. I won't even smoke in my brothers basement because my nephew plays there. I wish I didn't smoke, but I do. That doesn't give me the right to harm others with my smoke. I also hate it when I go to a restuarant that allows smoking and people are sitting in the smoking sections with kids and babies. It's so bad, don't they care about their children? Maybe they don't give it a thought, but how could you not with all the publicity out about how bad it is for you???

I agree. The children deserve the right to have a clean air and a good parent example as well. Smokers should put their habit in place and respect the rights of the non-smokers.

Woo Hoo! Sorry to post on such an old discussion, but I was so thrilled by the title that I couldn't contain myself. I so wish some of these laws would trickle down to the 'armpit' of Kentucky, where I happen to live. (small coal-mining town in easter half of the state). Can you believe that smoking is still allowed in all public buildings and greater than 70 percent of the citizens of this town smoke! My 16-year old son is a member of a school group trying to go up against the city counsel to at least ban smoking in restaurants where children are eating. They are being met with great resisitance of course. Man to even have it banned in cars would just tickle me pink! No child should have to be harmed by an adults secondhand smoke. That is a form of abuse, pure and simple. Sorry, off my soapbox now! Thanks for making my day with the news of your discussion!!
