What do you think about Wikipedia

Do you think it is a valid source? I like it a lot and I used to believe it is valid, as anyone can see mistakes and correct them. But, after a discussion we had with my brother-in-law, I started to doubt a little bit. He tends to believe that it can be used to promote opinions or points of view, that it is not accurate and that the fact that anybody can edit can lead in very bad or misleading articles. He believes the same thing for all the Wikies. What is your opinion?

I like wikipedia a lot! I can find almost anything there. Whatever information I need to find, it's right there on Wikipedia. It's really useful and helpful.
But, like what you said is true. I do doubt some of the information there because it's open to whoever who wants to edit the information there. But, if everyone kept adding false information, I'm sure something will be done to prevent it. If nothing is done, then Wikipedia would be facing a whole lot of problems trying to locate the errors and correcting them.
All in all, I still like using Wikipedia for getting information on anything I want.

I believe that the very fact that everybody can edit the information should mean that the information is reliable, cause the 99% of people wouldn't give information they are not sure about, or wouldn't let some users to alert the information.
And, as you say, they would certainly have done something to prevent this. But still, sometimes I doubt

Yes, this is my bro-in-law's opinion too. But do you know any specific example, any article inaccurate, or misleading? Because, truly, most articles I ve read, might be incomplete or poor, but I ve never came over to a mistake, or an expressed opinion, or any kind of bad information

I will just say this - we are not allowed to use it as a source when writing term papers at college.

I think it's a good starting point for information and research. I would never use it as my only source but it can help you find out basic information and help you know what else to look for. You have to take into consideration it's issues when reading the information and ask yourself if the info is something that can be swayed by a personal opinion. (i.e...the sky is blue vs. the sky is pretty)
