as my simple share in saving our environment from utter destruction i dont throw wrappers just about anywhere. if i see no garbage can around, i put the wrapper inside my bag and wait till i get home to dispose of it. just imagine if i throw a wrapper everyday and there a million of us who do that a single day, thats a million wrappers too. that is so many. i am also careful in buying products. i see to it that it has no chloroflourocarbons that is very dangerous to our zone layer. i also try to recycle and reuse old items so that they wont add up to the pile of garbage that have not yet been totally disposed of.
how about you? any simple things you do to help our environment?

I reduce my electricity consumption especially in using airconditioners. I try not to switch it on and use the electric fan instead.

thats great. we dont use the airconditioner all the time too. we only use it at night because it helps the baby at home sleep better. if the weather is cold then we dont use it.

yes we should do that. we should cut on our electricity and find ways to cool down without using air conditioners all the time. this way we help save electricity, save our pockets and help the environment. thanks for sharing that zelle_gatoc.

We use the special low-energy light bulbs. Think about how many lightbulbs are on in your house, then multiply that by all the houses, businesses, etc. That's a lot of energy. This is a simple way to use less energy, and not have to change the bulbs as often!

Oh, and after I wrote that I remembered aluminum. Apparently refining aluminum uses an insane amount of energy, so use it sparingly, reuse if possible, and recycle it where you can.

If you have clutter and/or items around your house you dont want to be bothered with selling or taking to the dump - then Freecycle is for you at www.freecycle.org for a Freecycle group in your area. Freecycle is international. Recycle items to avoid overfilling the garbage dumps and make space in your home. One man's trash is another man;s treasure" truely applies here. I have given away so many things that I almost trashed that someone wanted and even came and carted it away. You can put in requests, too, and from there I received a free handicapped electric lift recliner worth over $400.00 someone didnt need anymore! The only requirement is that you cant give away forbidden items like explosives and such and everything must be FREE, you cant barter, exchange or sell. Try it yourself!

Me too! Its the least I can do. I stuff my candy wrappers in my pocket until I get home so I can trash them properly. I also do recycling which I find fun, practical and also helps the environment.

helping the environment is very important to me, too...i will never throw trash on the ground. Sometimes, if i've been out in the woods or walking the creeks for a while, my pockets will be full of nothing but trash!..lol..i recycle a lot, too, trying to find practical uses for empty containers, etc. And another thing that i'm really proud to be a part of, is the business i work for..we are a timeshare resale company, and we have a division of the company where people can donate their timeshares to us, we sell them and use the profits to help keep the lakes and creeks around the area cleaner and prettier...

the simple thing i could do is set an example to young kids so that they would be educated in a way to help conserve the environment. i usually tell them not to throw garbage anywhere even how little they are and teach them to segregate their household wastes cause sometimes people don't even know the difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. i think it is pretty wise that we educate the young ones so that they will have it in them to value and respect the environment when they themselves become leaders of nations.

I go overboard to make up for those that don't. You name it I do it. Not one of my kids has a poopie diaper in a land fill. We use as much solar and wind power as we can. I compost everything. I recycle everything. We are in the midst of "making" our own bio diesel. I only buy enviromentally friendly product. I use baking soda and vinegar for additional cleaning. My makeup brand is vegan. And anything else that gets suggested
We als raise organic livestock. And I can and freeze my own fruits and veg, all organic of course.

Yes , it is a small beginning but definitely a poitive step towads making our environment more friendly. I do the same. I also try to buy less of plastic items and try to reuse the item. We should recycle more and reduce the usage of eco unfriendly items. We should get into the habit of carrying our own cloth or paper bag and when we buy something we should carry them in our own bag.

I try to reuse things instead of buying new. Like, two liter bottles have become funnels, gallon jugs become things like planters and storage containers (appropriately trimmed). Cereal boxes get covered with pictures cut from old magazines and newspapers and become magazine holders after being trimmed up. A juice can sits on my counter, holding my wooden spoons and dippers. I have even found myself choosing between different products depending upon the way I could reuse their containers to provide for other needs. Grocery bags become trash bags, styrofoam meat trays become drip catchers under plants, kleenex tissue boxes hold the grocery bags, and old clothing becomes rags that are used for cleaning and casual napkins. I mean, who cares what it looks like when you're the only one home? I try to minimise my use of paper products with rags, but keep a box of kleenex in public areas of my house so as not to offend or confuse those who wouldn't understand. There's lots you can do, and you end up saving money as well!

One thing that me and my hubby is doing at home is to use the energy saving bulbs(we've changed everything or all the bulds at hone to this). Then also, we have the recyling scheme where i live so we really do this religiously, i mean as much as we can we put them in the proper boxes, separate all the tins from bottles and plastics as well as the old newspapers and then that would be ready for pick up as scheduled.

One thing that I do to help our environment is by recycling all paper, bottles and cans that I have in my home. I believe that recycling is very important in preserving our environment. My sister introduced biodegradeable pens to me so I will start using them as well. I do not smoke so that helps the air that we breathe.

I don't run the water while I brush my teeth.
I do not, under any condition, litter.
I take plastic bags back to the grocery store when my supply builds up.
I use the plastic grocery bags as trash bags in my home cans, therby not having to buy additional plastic bags
I buy large items and refill the ONE small one that I have bought for products such as bathroom hand soap (liquid), dish liquid, mustard, ketchup, etc.
I buy large bags of chips and place into tupper containers for childrens lunches rather than buy the small individual bags.
I don't put children's sandwiches in baggies, I use a tupper container
I try not to use plastic wrap unless forced...I use an additional plate to cover items in the microwave, I use bowls with lids to store left overs.
I buy recycled notebook paper for my children
I do not 'warm' my car in the mornings (unless for instance it gets to zero degrees.)
I consolidate trips when planning my day
When possible, my husband and I carpool to work
I take all household items and clothing that are no longer wanted/needed to a shelter and a place that our town has for the needy to acquire belongings
I don't buy wrapping paper for gifts, I use the giftbags and reuse them (if it is family or a very close friend to whom the gift was give...I take it back!)
At Christmas, rather than ask for gift boxes, I place items into empty cereal boxes etc. (once you remove the plastic bag it is a fine box). People get a kick out it when they open it too!
There are many more..but I don't want to bore you!

A recycled aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV or computer for 3 hours or a 100-watt lightbult for 20 hours. (source: California Integrated Waste Management Board)

wow, I didn't realize that one can would do that much! Think of the thousands of cans that are thrown away daily on one college campus, or in one day on the beach!

I don't litter. And I'm proud to say that. Well, except for this once. Only.
I try to cut down on the consumption of electricity as well and reuse the papers as scrap paper.
I have got loads of scrap paper from all the extra paper that I have in my old exercise books and notepads.
They're still stacked up in my shelf, waiting for its turn to be used.

Same here. I make it a habit not to throw any candy wrapper or used plastics just anywhere. Trash bins are scattered all around, all you have to do is keep your junk with you till that time a garbage can is around. I don't smoke... I don't use my car if it's not really necessary... I patronize recycled products... etc. etc.
