Peace in our lifetime?

When I was young I believed that one day mankind we grow wise a cease fighting over territory and religion. As I grew older I realized that world peace would not be easily attained because of politics and greed, but still I held hope close to my heart.
Now in these trying times when it seems that everything is falling apart, I find that hope harder to keep alive. I have children and that prevents me from dispair because to have children means that you must believe in the future, or you would lose your mind.
It all seemed so simple in the ideals of youth for peace to happen. We would be kind to each other, listen to and respect differences. Now it isn't so clear. Is peace possible for mankind and how will we get there?

No, I'm sorry to say, there will never be
peace in the world. In addition to what you
have already listed, I only want to add one
more thing.
Man is born inherently evil. This is part of
the reason we have organized religion. To let
man know that there are consequences for our
behaviors. That keeps most people under control.
The military and police control the rest, except
for the criminals who can't control themselves at
all.
Mankind is a very disturbed species. I know that
sounds weird coming from another person but look
what we're doing to ourselves and our world.

Thanks for your response, Jumpinjack. You're correct that organized religion helps people stay out of trouble. Its ironic that many of the worst conflicts are started by these same religions. Still I believe there are many fine, intelligent people in the world. It is for them, and because of them that I haven't written the whole species off!

Thanks for the nod. Organized religion is indeed
a double edge sword. It shows people the right
path while creating a bunch of fanatics at the
same time.
You are correct. We can't write off the entire
human race but we all have it in us to be evil,
however suppressed we keep it or so called
civilized we are.
Why do you think even the intelligent like CEOs,
politicians, etc., commit crimes? Because it's
born into us.

Perhaps we are born into evil, but I think that we also add to the problem by the way we treat each other. In this world there are so many with riches and so many more who are impoverished. Those that have live well, and those without go hungry. Is it any wonder that there is such a tendency by some to covet what belongs to others?
Here I think both our innate nature and our environment conspire against us, leaving us trapped in a world always on the verge on conflict.
