IN general the life span of animals in the wild is decided more by their ability to defend themselves against attack than by their physical makeup. This is why tortoise are particularly well adapted for survival, despite their slow movements. THeir strong shells, into which they retreat when threatened with danger, make them able to withstand almost any attacker except man. So they are able to survive for long time, and some species can even live to be 150 years old. GInat tortoise that weight over 230 kilos (about 500 pounds) live in the remote Galapagos Island.
