How would you know if your guy is an abusive person beneath his gentle facade?

"No woman deserves to be hurt". But there are allot of women out there who are abused physically, verbally and emotionally. I was one of them.. my best friend .. my workmate... Now that i am legally free, i am afraid to get seriously involved with another guy again. I have a boyfriend now but i have not met him in person yet because he is a foreigner. He will be coming over in the Philippines on May to meet me. He is my boyfriend for more than a year and he proposed marriage last December. What should I do to know if my bf is not an abusive person?
