What do you look out when buying a new car?

I am due for a new car and do not know which one to go for. can anyone help me. I drive a Toyota Tazz and would like to make a change to the new Avanza, but don't know anything abt cars. I need a reliable car, because I put quite a few k's on the clock. I bought my tazz in 2003, and has 124000k's on the clock. so I need some advice on whether the car is economically viable, rpm's etc.
