Why is anime censored when it comes to America?

I have heard that anime shows get edited when they are shown on American TV because the shows are deemed "too violent" or "too suggestive" for our children. This doesn't make any sense to me, because Japanese children watch the exact same shows unedited. Their parents don't seem to have a problem with them watching those kinds of show. I don't see why it's such a problem here.
Do you think it's a cultural difference? Are the Japanese more lienent with what they let their children watch? What are your thoughts?

Well it's a common fact that americans are nuts about censorship in movies and television.

That is true, but I don't see why they change it from one country to the next! It makes no sense to me why what is OK in one country is not OK in another.

Don't wory, in Romania as in many other countries hepened the same. I think that in that way the only thing they succed to do is confusinng all of us. I saw an anime at TV 10 years ago and wen i saw it again online 4 months ago it was like seing a diferent show. If they don't want that children look at violence they should rate tha anime or move it at a diferent hour (just like here happened).
