First, isn't it amazing that we call wars within countries "Civil Wars"? TO me the most uncivil war is one in which brother and sister must fight against one another. Not that any war is more or less civil than another, as none of them are civil, they are all hideous acts of inhumanity. War is repulsive, gut-wrenching and heart-breaking, but they are a fact of this life that will continue as long as there is greed and people who think they must impose their beliefs on others. For example, many feel that the American Civil War was about slavery. The was was not about slavery. My husbands family has been in the south since the late 1600's, the other portion of his family is Native American. None of his family every accepted or wanted slavery. Most of the people his family knew did not want anything to do with slavery. Only a small percentage of people actually owned slaves, and these types of people will take advantage of others at all cost no matter what day and age they live in. The war was about states rights. The south strongly believed in the constitution, in states rights and the rights of the people based on the liberties given by the constitution. They North wanted a strong government, which was infringing on the rights of the states. President Lincoln knew that the Union must remain together. He understood both sides of the discussion, but knew that above all the Union had to stay together. What is even worse is that this is not taught. Our children have no idea what any of this means. The words of Robert E Lee, "Let each man resolve to be victorious, and that the right of self-government, liberty, and peace shall find him a defender". We must learn to stand up for what is right, but we must also learn to allow others to live freely as they see fit. This lends us to understand that there is another civil war going on...the war that is waged on women each and every day. The war that says a woman must choose whether she will be successful based on if she has children or not. The casualities are great, thousands of children each month die. They have committed no offense, yet they are killed, even to the point right before they take their first breath of air. Civil? I think not.
