Me i'm a computer science engineer. So i try to solve the problem by first analysing whats wrong and then i go down to the ground details.
I usually dont call the service provider.

I myself do all the trouble shooting for my pc.It depends what problem you get.Suppose my mouse is not working properly then i remove the ball out of it and clean the wheels in it.Then it starts working like it used to do.Troble shooting depends on what problem you have.

in the biginning i use to call vendor but now i solved all computers problems itself. but only if the problem is related to software and if problem is related to hardware then i use to call vendor.

usually i handles small faults by myself. most times software problems occur. i isntalls os again. i have xp boot disk with me. in cases when the hardware get complaint, i mean keyboard, mouse etc i clear it by myself. if anything happen in monitor or on power side of computer i contacts service provider. the cases like probems in RAM, SMPS changing etc are done by me. i also installs cd and dvd drives myself.

I do all the maintenance myself from hardware, software and network troubleshooting. All of the desktops I've owned I assembled myself. Each computer I've assembled takes no more than half an hour to assemble provided that I have everything I need and everything fits right. I know how to install cooling kits and to overclock and underclock the proc and video card.
I've tried before to call technical support and it's hard in the tech supports part to visualize your problem because all they have to work with is the information you're relaying to him on the phone. Sometimes you might be more knowledgeable than them in terms of technical knowledge.

Problem related hardware can be divide into software problems and really hardware problems.
If threre are like software problems, almost i can fix that. But if really hardware problem, no more i can do unless buy a new one.

I feel I quite dumb at this even though I am computer professional. I am software professional but pretty bad at hardware related problems. So I just give few attempts whenever I come across a issue and then call the computed gods :-), the service providers.

well well i take care of the entire maintenance of my computer... be it a Hardware or Software issue.... In fact i've assembled my own PC and its quite old now... but still it's giving me a standard performance.. I have worked for the US Dell customers as well and have provided them with technical support.... so i like when some issue comes up... it gives me the opportunity to learn more.... U can ask me if u need any tips.... thanks

If the problems is related to software issues like operating system, application error or others, i will fix it myself, don't need other people helps. But if the problems related to computer hardware like mouse, keyboard, memory, harddisk, usually i need my friends help because i cannot fix it by myself.

I'm pretty okay when it comes to fixing minor or issues which aren't major. (which is pretty much most of what i come across)
Although i have had the odd problem and have had to contact customer care for issues which i can't resolve. =)
Kudos.
