I suggest that you download an antivirus that does not use a lot of memory. Norton antivirus does use a lot of memory, which is the main reason why your machine slows down tremendously. Currently, I am using avira antivir personal classic edition. This can be downloaded at their official website at www.free-av.com. Since using this software, I have never experienced any problems at all with regards to the overall function and system performance of my machine. Otherwise, I am so impressed and gateful with its performance. It is very light on resources and does not use a lot of memory. Hence, does not slow down your computer. It also updates automatically on a regular basis and can be scheduled any time in your convenience. I suggest also that you upgrade your SD-RAM if you have too many applications installed in your machine. Hope this would help. Have a nice day and God speed!

Thank you for responding. The problem is that I paid for one year protection by norton antivirus and I still have about 200 over days left. I guess I either forfeit that and use your suggestion or wait it out. Bless you.

try AVG atntivirus.its free and has received good feedback from users. Also u need to take a lot os security measures urself. i had writen abt them in some other post. n its too long to type agin. but if u follow those steps then u wont get more than 1 or 2 virus attacks in a year. and even if any virus gets into ur system it will be dormant and harmless.

I have been using Avast for a number of years now. It's a nice little program which is FREE! Hurrah! I have used it on systems that have less than 64mb of RAM in it and it doesn't slow down the running speed one bit [unless you are on dial up and it is uploading the updates ... which it does automatically!] Good luck!!

I like the fact that it is free - it is sure worth considering together with all the rest suggested. Don't like to be tied down to a software by money, like what is happening to me now. Grrr.

Fire wall, get Zone Alarm, they are free, I hated Norton because it slowed down my system. Get Avast Home use its free and when you down load any zip or exe or any down load what so ever, run a virus scan over it before you open it.

Hi there. I've been using AVG for wuite some time now and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It's not a resource hog like norton so it doesn't slow down my computer. Best of all, it's free. You can update it regularly too. Here's the link if you want to check it out. http://free.grisoft.com Good luck!

Well, you can use a CD backup of anti virus & you can use it whenever you want to run it and scan for the viruses. but you need to put in your machine whenever you`re connected to internet. Good day!

You can either use AVG or NOD32. You can download them on p2p sites or search them in rapidshare. If you think having a combination of anti-viruses is good, well it's not. It'll cause a lot of system conflicts and will definitely slow if not freeze your computer. I once installed like 3 anti-virus programs in my pc it caused me such a huge headache specially when each anti-virus program was updating itself the other anti-virus programs would automatically stop the updating and inform you that it is a virus. Just stick to one anti-virus program and also use reg cleaner.

Thank you for your valued advice. Some of the computer terms you used are over my head. But the main drift is not to use multiple antivirus programs right? Right now I only have Norton Antivirus and will uninstall it if I decide to change to another.

Never download unuseful software and other things from internet, never visit unsecure website, always use Suitable Antivirus and spyware, update your antivirus, scan your computer twice a month, you will secure your computer

you could try the other antivirus programs that more lightly slowing your systems, like me, I'm right now using NOD32 I think it a lot lighter than norton antivirus (I'm ex user of nav also), just as my precautions to you if you connected to the internet it is better if you use antivirus, since there is somany sites or other attack. IMHO

I completely agree with you that Norton is a terrible resource hog. But it isn't the only anti-virus. You can use AVG, which is free, as good as Norton and is much much lighter!! And there are many other reasons for a computer to be slow too. You can pick up some important steps to speed up your computer from my blogsite: pctonic.blogspot.com
