Why certifications are needed in IT field ?

What is the need for doing the certifications in IT field ? In what way it will help ...

I think certifications give you an edge when it comes two selecting two people with the same technology...You will be tested against the topics that will judge you considering the basic concepts for that technology...

Cerification is must in IT field.If you apply for any post online certification is a must.I am working in this field and working as a network Engineer.Hot certification in this field are MCSE,CCNA,CCNP,CCIE,Red hat linux certification etc.If you have any further doubts regarding this subject send me message.
