Compliments from a stranger... Scary for girls, or acceptable?

Hi, I was hoping my fellow 'MyLotters' could help me out with this. (God I hope I get credited for the invention of that word!) If a stranger, say at college or the supermarket, pays you a compliment such as 'You are very beautiful' or 'You have very nice hair', do you get freaked out, or are you pleasantly surprised? And it's not someone 20 years older, possibly a peer. What would your exact thoughts, emotions and/or feelings be? Thanks in advance!!
