I had one as a child as well, but we kept in touch until a couple years ago. She was from Australia. It's sort of ashame that we lost touch after all those years. Maybe I'll send a letter and see what happens, just for kicks.

I haven't heard that in a while , with the wave of internet, penpals are definetly a thing of the past ... I guess in all reality having friends to chat to is a penpal ... just not as I remember penpals ...lol

I too had a penpal when I was younger...I think I was in grade six or so. Somehow I lost contact with her and now like you I keep in touch with my friends on the internet. I guess the ones I've met and stayed in contact with over the internet could kind of be called penpals...don't you think?

I had pen pal when I was in school days. With the advent of internet and emails , I switched all my friends in internet. So, I am staying in touch with all my friends. It's nice to continue friendship from adolescent age to teenage and into twenties and so on. It gives a wonderful feeling for the friendship of ages!! Cheers, Nithya

When I was 12, I had a penpal named Rene who lived in England during the war. She wasn't allowed to talk about the war so her letters were filled with cheerful stuff. My uncle was in the air force there and told us how the air raid sirens would go off and everyone rushed to get into shelters until the bombs quit falling. I started worrying about Rene but she told me a couple of times the post office had blacked out stuff I had written to her so I didn't mention the war either. After the war, I had one letter from her telling me that she was going to a trade school, and that she would write again soon. I never heard from her again and letters I sent were marked, "moved, left no forwarding address." I have often thought about Rene and have wondered if she were even still alive. After all, neither of us are spring chickens any more. Maybe it's time to find a new penpal.

I started pen paling since 1998 and I am still pen paling, while I love the internet. I am thinking that pen paling through email lacks something that I love in snail mail letters. Many of my pen pals have stopped writing to me, but I still write to some that started to write me in 1998, 1999 and the earlier years. There were many pen pals that stopped due to studying and others that lost interest or what not. It is upsetting, but I must accept their decision. I love chatting on the internet as an alternative, and there are some people that I do have as e-pals, and they do write to me, but many e-pals I have stopped writing me after only two emails! So it can be upsetting. Sometimes they want you to email them once a day and I forget, so that is why I prefer snail mail the best for pen pals. Pablo

I used to have a pen pal from Australia, but for some reason we lost contact. I think I was the last person to write but when I hadn't heard from her in a couple months I was going to write her again, but I couldn't find her new address. :( I love having pen pals from other places around the world!!
