What does 3G mean in the mobile phone ads?

third(3rd) generation mobile phones, capable of video streaming and or watching tv depending on your line provider. greetings. : )

I understand that is the new mobile phone network we are getting here in Australia. I am not sure if it replaces the digital network but it certainly will replace the CDMA one. In the country we have CDMA and with that we can also pick up the digital network. I am not too sure that we will have the same coverage with this new 3G.
I think the 3G stands for third generation.
