Too many books, what to do with them.

We moved recently and I found I have about 20 boxes of books. My husband had to move the boxes, because of the weight. He fussed at me about it and told me I needed to get rid of them. I have been collecting them since we got married over 25 years ago. I agree there are just too many. I never knew how many I actually had until we moved. Many of them were given to me and I have already read them or I figured I would read them later and never got around to it(poor subject matter). I would love to get rid of them, but who would want them.
Anyone interested in romance novels from the 70's and 80's?
There are a lot of them, and I will never read them. I have others, too, that are not romance, but I have no interest in keeping them.
Any ideas?

Thank you for your ideas, I think I will do that. There are not too many places around this area to donate to. There are a couple of nursing homes that I know of.
I like the idea of selling them on eBay, but I have no idea how to go about it. I guess it is time to learn something new. Thanks, and take care.

Not a bad idea, but with the amount of books that I have, they would cover every wall, LOL.

I live in a very small community. So the only thing we have here is a thrift store that is about 10 miles away. I have donated some to our local nursing home, that is about all I have done with them as of yet.

Well if you need money , you are sitting on a goldmine.
Used book stores will buy them, you can get a free website and sell them
online, Or on ebay. Have a garage sale and sell them. Take them to a flea-market and sell them.
There are lots of ways to get rid of them if you don't want to sell them .
Call the Salvation Army and they will pick the up. Take them to a Goodwill store.
Donate them to a hospital, library or a retirement home.
Put them out in the yard close to the curb and put a sign on the box "Free Books"
and someone will take them. If they are still in good shape give a few of them away with a "thinking of you card" to your friends.
I would like that, wouldn't you?
Wow, some of them may be worth more now than when you got them if they are that old. Check to see before you get rid of them. No matter what you do please don't trash them. Someone somewhere will take them and be happy to get them.

pass them on to friends and family. i love to read and so do all my sisters. we pass books between us and if i have a favourite book i will keep it to read again. you could donate them to a charity shop, they sell books quite cheap.

Is there a second hand store around where you live or a book exchange store? I know that in some places, you give them two and you get one. You can also have a garage sale, donate them to a nursing home. With romance novels, you might have a problem. Some second hand bookstores do not want them anymore, but if you try the garage sale first, you could get rid of some.

Speaking facetiously.... I didn't KNOW there was such a thing as "too many books."
I moved recently, too-- I think we had about 115 boxes of books, and my back cursed me all the way.
Kidding aside, you might find that some of them are somewhat "in demand," and would fetch a decent price on eBay. It requires a little research to see what a book typically sells for-- I did sell some books before moving, and found (to my surprise) that a couple of my "coffee table books" sold for in excess of $100 each; the best being a book (evidently rare) about French crystal which fetched $310. So you never know.
Failing that, if you're feeling charitable, give the books to your local library. Most library systems are happy to have books-- and will "cherry pick" volumes for their own collections, and let the rest go to their "friends of the library" book sales. Many libraries raise extra cash by selling donated books-- check with your library to see if they have such a program.
If you're feeling "adventurous," and want to see more about what actually happens to your books, get involved with Book Crossing-- http://www.bookcrossing.com -- and set your books free in the world. It gets rid of the books, and also offers a way to make friends with other book lovers around the world.

I give mine to shelters, it gives people something to do while they are in a tough situation. Also if there are any children's books, then any children's homes would gladly take them off your hands.Hope I helped :)

LOL, I'm in the same boat, though not as many boxes. You've gotten alot of good advice so far but I wanted to point out that if you have a half price books type store, they don't pay much for the older romance novels. I started off with 2 boxes of books there and was astonished when they only offered $3 for about $600 worth of books (cover prices of course). I took them back home with me, as you can imagine.
This weekend we're having a garage sale so I hope I can sell a few this way & get more than the used book store offered. It's a little easier than ebay too.
The other thing I wanted to mention is that you may want to go thru your boxes to make sure you don't give away something valuable. When I went thru mine, I found a few treasures printed in 1946 & 1950. I'm glad I found them before letting them just slip away. :)

do you still have those 20 boxes of books? I started reading romance novels - silhouette, loveswept, etc. when i was in the 8th grade i've been pretty much a steady reader for about 30 years now but never really kept the books i read. I've been thinking it would be fun to find some of the books i read years ago and re-read them....
