Hip Dysplasia In Large Dogs

We just bought a Newfoundland puppy, but neither him or his parents were registered. His parents looked healthy, and didn't show any signs of hip dysplasia (disease too common on large dogs!) but now we are worried about our puppy! Does anyone know the signs of this disease and how young they can be to contract it? Also I would like to know your opinion on whether or not hip dysplasia is genetic or environmental. We love our puppy, and don't want him to suffer!
