I am thinking about going over to Italy for about 2 weeks next year and want to start planning the trip now as i will be taking my bf and leaving the kids with his parents.
I just want to know what are the best places to visit and what places to avoid and why.

Having been to Italy several times, and loving it I have grouped travel into Italy into four easy chunks. Each group takes about a week and requires a car.
For a two week trip, you can cut through the country in the north - south axis and then do a couple of small zig zags. The Lonely Planet guide is great to help you pick and choose, but these towns and cities are worth visiting.
If I go, on about the food, people, hotels and such, it will end up being a guide book, and why bother when there are excellent ones available.
Group I
Torino, Como, Lago di Como, Milano, Verona, Padua, Treviso, Venice, Trieste
Group II
Genoa, Parma, Modena, Bologna, Pisa, Firenze, San Marino
Group III
Roma, Vatican City (not Italy, but too good to miss), Teramo. This really takes about a week,if you want to explore and enjoy.
Group IV
Brindsi, Taranto, Potenza, Barletta and Fogia. This should take about 4 days and save 2 days for Sicily.
Happy travelling.
