What is the one thing you would do to save the Earth?
Turn off all unneccesary lights.
Kids leave bathroom lights on and run away. We leave our bedroom lights on, when in the dining room. I am committed and committing my family to turn off all unneccessary lights. This is our contribution.
What is yours?

That is one of my peeves is lights that are on that are unnecessary. I am very frugal about my money and do have one of the lowest electric bills in my neighborhood but if no one is in the room... turn off the lights.
The other thing I did was replace almost every light in my house with flourescent ones. That has made a huge difference.

Convert to fluoroscent or energy saver lamps! Great.

I actually have two majors both of which I realize have only a minor impact on an individual basis. On any trip under ten kilometres I ride my bike rather than us my truck. Any trips longer than that I use public transport if at all possible. The second thing I have done is convert my lighting at home to compact florescent lights. This is not only good for the planet but it is also saving me money on my light bill.
I do have a third project in the works but it is much more complicated and is proving difficult. I am trying to set up a Biodiesel production facility but I am finding it difficult, attracting the start-up capital I need.

Awesome about the bio-diesel. But that only substitutes burning fossil fuel with bio-fuel. But still a great effort.
Biking for trips less than 10km. This is superb.
Using public transport, another great contribution.
Thanks.

I usually do only little small actions like not wasting water bearing in mind that some people on this same world is not being able to have water, finish my food bearing in mind that a lot of people are dying of hunger everyday and also turn off all unnecessary lights..;)

Great!
Another reason to not waste food is that it takes a lot of energy to produce, transport, store, cook and serve food. So no food waste... great one.

Yes that is true. By being vegetarian you move one level down the food chain. That saves a lot of energy. The production, slaughtering, transportation and storage of animal protein consumes huge amounts of energy. Thanks for sharing this.

Happiness is defenitely infectious and so is the power of postive thinking.
But like Madonna's song, I am looking for something material in terms of your contribution to save the earth as well.
Would you for example be willing to eliminate 50% of plastics from your life?

Don't kill anyone! I mean, don't kill any animal, or any other sort of living thing, like trees, unless it is for your sustenance, like food and basic needs. Never go beyond what the Nature requires you to survive. Do not destroy anything for fun. Animals do not kill unless for food - even the predator animals. It is never done for fun or for revenge. So, let us learn from the Nature. Water conservation is also a lesson we need to learn from the nature. Don't overuse anything.

I decided a few days ago that I should really try to do something about the amount of energy we use. For a start, I'm horrendous at leaving lights, TV's, computers, and so on turned on when I leave them. I am going to start turning these things off, unplugging my laptop at night, and try to only have one thing running at once.

That is great. I have seen this happen. The TV is on, while the stereo is blaring away and you are working on your laptop. Yup having just the one on will easily save a couple of hundred watts of electricity.

I agree with you. To save the electricity is the one important thing, which we all can do to save the earth. We should alway try to save electricity, where ever we are either at office, or at home or some where else. Another thing we can do is to save water. Water is priceless. The more we save more the better. We should also protect our green gold.

I live in an apartment, so there isn't a great deal I can do. I've replaced regular bulbs with compact flurorescents in my lamps, and in the summer, I usually set the air conditioner for 79 or 80, and use fans to circulate the air.

We recycle everything, and we are talking about composting too.
One of the first things I did to help make a difference was to stop running water while I brushed my teeth. We taught that to our daughter and she has remarked to me how odd it is when people she knows leave the water running while they brush their teeth.

Eliminate waste of water! What a noble contribution. We expend a lot of energy to filter, clean and pipe water into our homes. It is a resource worth conserving.

My contribution is education (through my job and my master's thesis) and through recycling. I try to recycle and reuse everything. When I buy things, I try to buy the item with the least amount of extraenous packaging. Otherwise, I try to reuse the packaging. I even have been known to take things out of (not dig though, ew) the trash that are recycble.

Conserve water. I only use the water when I actually need it. I don't leave it on, it's rather pointless. I also recyle since I have the chance to do so. It only takes a few minutes to do, so I'm really not wasting any of my time. During the day, I don't turn the lights on, I only use certain lights when necessary and then I turn them right back off. No point in leaving them on. And, in a sense, I either walk everywhere I need to go, use public transportation, or in a sense, car pool with two others whenever I need to go somewhere.

Hi coffechat, I feel by eradicating deforestation and planting more trees we could save mother earth. Even your suggestion is a very good one, people unmecessarly keep the lights turned on even when not in use,its bad. Hope if every one understands and contribute their part whatever little we can save her.
Happy Mylotting!
