Monica,a 25-year-old office worker from dalhsiung county, worries about her handwriting skills."i use my computer to write emails.i use my cell phone to send text messages to friends.it is so easy for me to forget how to write chinese characters!"Monica is not alone in her worries.there is growing concern that modern communication devices are threatening writing skills in many languages.experts specifically worry about chinese handwriting,a tradition nearly 4000 years old.

My writing skills have never really been good. I've always had messy writing that even I had a hard time reading. If it weren't for computers, I wouldn't write anywhere near as much as I do. For me, practice did not make perfect. I think it can be important to still write by hand, but for students especially it is a good thing that computers are now available.

It's true though, most definately. My handwriting used to be very neat, very precise .. now I can barely hold a pencil for more than a few minutes at a time, and when I do, the writing is nowhere near up to par with what it was before.
I should mention I'm a web designer, I spend almost all my time typing. I type code, I type articles for debates and blogs, I type emails. I type accurately and quickly, well above 90 words per minute with a 99 per cent accuracy.
However, the better I am at typing, the worse my handwriting gets, and the more uncomfortable it is to write by hand.

Most schools don't teach much cursive anymore. And many don't put much emphasis on printing either. Legiblity and penmanship is becoming a lost art. I think it makes the writer look less intelligent when they can't write. Yes, technology is improving to where there are fewer reasons to write, but it's still a very valuable tool to have. Not only for communication, but just for working on fine motor skills.

yes,you are very right, and our cursive and penmanship will become the archaic arts in future,as the modern techonolgy grows very fast.
