Was anyone surprised that Marcel did not make "Top Chef"?

To me, it looked like he had it in the bag! I think he probably deserved it, yet he also seemed to be a pain in the ..... to the others.

I think Marcel would have won if his overall attitude would have been better throughout the show and if he would have acted more mature. Even though he acted like a juvenile at times, I thought that the cast members were too hard on him. Just my opinion.

I agree completely. None of them should have been airing their personal irritations on national tv. I would think a chef is not any exception to a career in which you should behave professionally.

I wasn't surprised that Marcel didn't win the overall contest. I didn't think he deserved to win. At one point the judges commented on who was the Top Chef right now vs who would be the Top Chef of the future. Given the circumstance of Marcel forgetting some of his ingredients and also working on that special technique for the salad that failed miserably, it seemed to me that Elan was much better suited to be the winner since he seemed to have better overall control of his entire presentation than Marcel did. I also have a problem with Marcel using those additives in his food. I don't associate adding chemicals to food with knowing how to prepare and serve food well. That was another reason I liked what Elan did much better. I may not want to eat his baby eels, but at least I know the food he prepared was free of chemicals that reminded me more of a lab experiment than dinner.

You're absolutely right about the chemicals. At the time I also thought, "Whhaaa--ttt the heck?" What was all that, junk to add texture to his sauces? Enhance the color of his food? Tricks of the trade I suppose, but we get it forced on us every time we go grocery shopping! That stuff was supposed to be 'fresh'! I'm surprised I didn't hear a comment about that from one of the judges or maybe I missed it. If you liked that show you might also like "Top Design". I do.

I was very surprised because listening to the (heavily edited) judges' discussion, I really thought Marcel was going to win. I think this was an example of the producers of the show dictating the result. Marcel was so unpopular with viewers that had he won, they would have lost them for the next season, or so they thought. Therefore, I think the judges were told who to pick. Elan was a great choice, in my opinion, because he is more mature, but everything he did was Spanish and that seemed to bug the judges.
