Smelly wood stoves when not in use

We have vaccumed out our freestanding wood burning stove and had the chimney cleaned, but the stove still smells awful, especially in damp weather. We have used the special bottled deodorent made for fireplaces, which doesn't help. We stuffed the stove with wadded up newspaper, as suggested by a friend. That did not work either. Our whole downstairs "stinks". Help.
