It is rare that a sequel will live up to the expectations and hype surrounding it but there are a few that actually do, the planet of the apes movies are a prome example, with each installment they just got better and better, some say star wars is the same ( although i am not a fan myself)

Sometimes they are sometimes they aren't. I reckon it depends on whether they were thinking of making a sequel before or during the making of the first one, because then they would know how to connect them onto each other. If they just make one and it goes well and they were'nt planning on making a sequel, it won't be as good. Just my view on it.

most sequels are NOT better than the first movies (prime example is the matrix). these are the movies i found whose sequels are better or at par with the original movie.. spiderman, shrek, american pie.. hmm, im still thinking of other movies but i think there are none already

Many people say The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie, and I'm pretty much inclined to agree. The third Indiana Jones was the best. Rocky 2 was better than Rocky, in my opinion. Aliens was better than Alien.
Conversely, Predator 2 sucked. Terminator 3 was nowhere near as good as 1 and 2. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was lackluster.
Sequels are better occasionally. But it's rare.

I my opinion I think the first films are the best. I have a feeling with sequels that they are trying to hard. The effect of suprise is also gone because you know what to expect. Like Shrek, Ice Age, Oceans Eleven. I thought the first ones were the best. The sequels were also good, but not that good.

Do the Lord of the Rings films count as sequels? If so, RotK was the best one. I don't think that counts though. Generally speaking, sequels are inferior to the first film. The 'Saw' trilogy has done well - the first one was great, the second one was a little weak, then the third one was very good. In my opinion, the best 'Nightmare on Elm Street' is the seventh one.
