For those who feel you have to spell right on mylot

I was going over the mylot guidelines..as many things have changed and came across this as a "dont do"I quote: ===== "(do not)Post discussions, responses or comments criticizing members for bad/broken English or bad spelling. Everyone is welcome at myLot, we have users from all around the world and they are welcome regardless of their proficiency with the English Language." ===== This is taken right out of the dont do section of mylot discussion guidelines.. ========= So let's all just be as welcoming as we can..it doesn't matter how you spell or what kind of grammar you have here..what matters is creating community.

I think that the important thing is to understand what other are saying. Sometimes some people use so much abreviation ( i don't answer to those). I hope that Mylot will help others (and myself) to improve their writing.

I dont think you read my topic..mylot ..in their guidelines says it's against policy to speak of the writing manners of anyone here. If we don't understand .we can ask for clarification..But I believe most people are able to be understand..no matter how limited their grasp of the English language.. ===== I remembe when I spent time in Portugal..how patient the community there was with me ..I walked around with a dictionary in my hand all the time..and I am sure my pronunciations were laughable..but not once did anyone every put me down for my pronunciation ;)++

Yes I red your topic even if my anwer wasnt directly about it :P That's why I said that it,s only important to at least understand people without them to speel everything right : That's what I meant :P

Yes, I agree with you. I personally do not complain about spelling or grammatical error. Even when I'm just chatting with my friends. The way I see it, as long as we can understand each other, s'all good. Sometimes I do have a hard time understanding the person so I either ask for clarification or I don't respond as all. Makes everyone's life easier.

I think criticism makes people feel uncomfortable ..and if you are known to criticize people are going to shy away from you:)+

i agree with you...although it may not be easy at times to decipher questions, everyone should have a chance...even probably the majority of americans i know can't spell right or use correct grammar...so everyone should have their say. Good post...thank you

Thank you. I read an american woman's discussion about the "problem", that why not everybody speaks english well?? And she really did not understood, that the English is not the only language we speak besides our mother tongue. And how can she critizy anybody, if she does not speak any other languages, and she has never been in another country...

Sorry to hear that you experienced that..many times people criticize out of ignorance..they don't understand what they are talking about..I have been in another Country: portugal..and know how hard it is to learn another language and that the sentence structure is almost completely reversed with most european language compared to our sentence structure;)+

Yes, I was re-reading the guidelines again myself a couple of days ago and I noticed that. I think that it's wonderful that Mylot are trying to make their international users feel more at home. It's true, they really should not have to fear being mocked or made fun of simply because English isn't their first language. I can't imagine how bad it would feel if I went to work on a site with a different language spoken there and people were harassing me about my bad language skills. I think that it's great that Mylot have said that criticizing people for things like that is against the rules! ^_^ Bravo to them for thinking to put that rule in! ^_^

Maybe they are not in the mood to focus on their spelling, as long as we can read, but complaining is not going to make them fix it.

well complaining is only going to get you a warning from mylot since mylot does say not to criticize or put someone down due to their spelling etc:)+

I think Mylot has been fair in accomodating everybody! We are a diverse community here and I think as long as we can understand each other, it really doesn't matter. How we spell or writing with a right grammar is just a better way to improve our writing skills. Thanks!

I don't really mind seeing wrong spellings here in myLot. I can still pick out the whole message anyway. On the other hand, please don't use it as an excuse not to work harder on grammar and spelling. It won't make you sweat or exhaust you in any way doing that.

This is not the place to learn grammar ..although maybe there may be some folks here who have accurate grammar..I don't believe that the majority here are English majors or teachers in school:)+

I agree that this probably isn't the place to learn grammar, but in saying that, if I wanted to learn French, I'd go to a French site and use it as an experience to improve my French.. but that's just what I would do.. :)

So true... I couldn't criticize someone just because they don't know english properly, that is a pretty low thing to do. Travelling around France I was made to feel really small because I didn't know french very well. Most people where good, but a few were certainly A-holes about... I tried, but I wasn't fluent...

There is a saying.."Experience is the best teacher" ..Like you ..I have travelled as a foreigner in another country..and so can truly sympathize with those who come here and share in a language that is not their own their ideas, hopes and more..:)+

North Americans in general don't have a great reputation right now to a lot of people. If we can show a tolerant attitude to others, while it may not help this reputation, it certainly wouldn't hurt it either...

i just try to get the jist of what people are saying. i understand that people are from other countries and of course the grammer and english is always hard to learn. i'm open because...of course, sometimes i type really fast and don't pay attetion and i might miss or add a few letters and of course, i'm not the best speller in the world. english was actually not my best subject in school i actually failed one quater of it. thank god for spell check though, but since people aren't too fussy about spelling and grammer here, i don't spell check most of my posts

i dont mind people with grammar and spelling problems, but what i am not easy in mylot is that some is posting in mylot and is using "text" messages like shortcuts of please to plz... and more. it is really hurtful to the eyes and i find it hard to understand what they are trying to say... im not sure about you guys but as for me... it is really not nice to read such...

I agree with that, though it is hard to understand when it's not clear. I have nothing against people who speak english as a second, or even third language and aren't completely fluent in it, but it's nice when they can actually spell words out properly or make their sentences clear. Know what I mean? Make it comprehensable atleast. You get more posts that way.

Well I will not comment on wanting them to make it spelled out as I don't think this is important..If I don't undestand something I ask the person to restate or rewrite or clarify what they have written..:)+

I teach 'English as a second language" in Thailand and confront the difficulties non-native English speakers have writing English on a daily basis. We should do every thing we can to encourage peoples efforts, not criticize them. That being said, the people who are native English speakers who resort to net speak or chat speak in there posts should not cry when they don't get responses , we are not all members of their secret club.

i so agree to that. & kudos to that mylot guidelines. english is just our universal launguage here. nationalities are just forced to write it in that language cause its a must. we must not comment bad over them. atleast they/we try to do our best to comprehend and say our minds. the intention of the respondent is to reply & help you wiht your post not to be disgust & judged by mean myloters.

YOu are right and you deserve praise for writing in our language whereby, otherwise, it would be easier to write in you own language.
