I have a dog, he is part shitzu, part pomeranian and part toy poodle. He is absolutely adorable. We love him to death. When he was six months old he began having seizures. He was diagnosed with animal epilepsy and put on a medication that will shut down his liver eventually. The meds have helped some, but not alot. They say epilepsy is pretty common in dogs and cats. Does anyone else suffer this with their pet? what are you doing to help them?

I have never heard of a pet disorder that seems this severe in dogs. My son has febrile seizures and we have to make sure to lie him on his side so that he does not choke on his saliva or lie him face down when one occurs. I don't know if this could apply to your dog.

We had him tested for other disorders because no one had every heard of this severity of epilepsy either, not even our vet. All of his tests came back fine. My dog is a crazy dog when he is having a seizure. There is no gently laying Shadow on his side, you can only make sure he doesn't slam into anything which means I catch him as he tries to fly and lay him down, then wait for him to do it again and again. I am afraid to hold him as tight as I would need to in order to restrain him. Sometimes he has lesser ones where he lays on his side on his own, but mostly...not.

My friend has a poodle that has seizures and he is on daily medication because his seizures had gotten very bad. He seems to be doing fine on them and is like his own self again. I'm not sure what type of medication he's on though. Have you asked your vet if there may be some other medication you might be able to use instead of the one he's on?

Yes I have thank you. I can't think of the name of it right off hand but the other med is worse still. I also have him on blue buff dog food, it is all natural and supposed to help clean the toxins out of thier system, so I am hoping to keep his liver healthy as best I can. Thank you everyone for responding.

My little dog, she is nearly 10 years old and has been suffering with these for quite a few years. I spoke to the vet about it and he said that because her seizures are not too regular, not to put her on medication yet as it has it's own problems as well. She only has a couple of seizures every couple of weeks. He said once they start becoming daily, then think about the medication.
I just talk to her and calm her down when she's having one and make sure she can't hurt herself. That's all I can do for now.
