Why Are Cigarettes Legal?

This discussion was inspired by the "why is alcohol legal?" discussion. I've always wondered this- cigarettes have been proven to cause all sorts of terrible diseases (cancer, for example), so why is it still legal when other harmful drugs are not? I don't think it's as like alcohol, which can sometimes actually be beneficial (wine in small doses is good for your heart, I believe). Anyone have any insights? (I mean this post with no offense whatsoever for those who smoke)

I think that is because they make some money. Otherwise there cannot be that motive to make them legal.

In our country Pakistan alchol is babbed bt ciggrates r legal...i think it is so because ciggrate donot harm the smoker as much as other alchols do.. and country also gains lots of profit by ciggrate companies..!!

I totally agree with you that Cigs are bad for health. But as usual with many things that people are habituated, ban doesn't work. If you make cigs illegal, black market will develop and people will start depending on it. So money goes to some private pockets increasing black money.

I don't know either. But I can give you my comments. There are some illegal gambling stuff right? And casinos are legal. And yet I don't know how to explain it. Well, let me just read some of the responses you got here.
