Yes I believe that a child as soon as they show interest in doing any thing about cooking, house work, washing clothes, cooking should be encouraged to do so. I started all my kids out to do things like pick up toys and clothes when they were as young as 2 and half Cooking they were about four, and cleaning house, like dishes, sweeping, and vaccuming at age six, seven and eight. By time they were all twelve they were very efficiant. I have over and over had mom's tell me that it is easier for them to do the work themselves and they will teach the kids later when in their teen years. Get a reality check when they become teens they don't want to hang out in the kitchen with you or learn to wash clothes or sew. They want to be with their friends and listen to music and do sports and things. My sons all married women who did Not know how to cook, and a couple of them did not know much about cleaning either. Mom's who do not teach thier kids to do these things at an early age fail to teach them at all. Windows of opportunity come for teaching when the child really wants to learn. Most start by age two or three with little simple chores, put away toys, or feed the kitty. and go up from there.

celanith I agree completely. I hated it growing up but it becomes quite usefull as an adult. My sisters and I were pretty much what felt like maids for a while. with dishes, dusting , vaccuuming, mopping floors, cleaning the bath room (my least favorite) and of course the yard. We had any where from 2 - 3 doggs at any point in time when we were kids. Cooking , my mother normally had to kick me out of the kithchen because my hands where in everything. and sewing I picked that up when I was about 6. when mom was sewing doll clothes for our dolls. To this day i still prefer to sew by hand. Haven't grasped the sewing machine yet.
