Hi there...actually not all breeds of cats are not afraid of water such as the Turkish Van who loves to swim in water (also known as the "swimming cats"--see http://www.swimmingcats.com/) and other breeds such as Bengal Leopard Cats (see avatar) too. Domestic cats who are descendents of the exotic cats species which are native to hot regions seem to enjoy water, whereas cat species from cold climate regions are not so fond of water. For example, tigers, lions, jaguars, ocelots, african servals, etc are from hot savannas and they enjoy swimming, dipping in water streams and ponds whenever the opportunity allows them. However, bobcats, cougars, lynx, etc live in colder climates and seldomly have interest in getting wet. The reason why is that water damages the ability of a cat's fur coat to insulate the animal against the cold, which isn't the problem with warm climate cats.
