Beta software is software that is workable but still under test. Most of the bugs will have been ironed out but there may still be some left in the programme which haven't yet been discovered. You will often see beta software available for download, this is so that manufacturers can test the software on many different computers with numerous different set ups and the user is able to report back any errors, stability problems, security flaws etc. so that the manufacturer can resolve all of these before they release the final version of the software which will likely be sold to consumers. Hope that helps.

Beta releases are, as far as I know, versions of a program, which are not yet marked as stable and reliable, they are still considered "under development". These releases have no guarantee whatsoever, that they work correctly, so if you install such software, you do it at your own risk.

Pretty much like version 1 and version 2 before you actually say something is ready for use. Some software with little or no testing given to user for testing ia alpha. Software that has completed alpha testing and going for the next round of testing by users after the defects from alpha testing are fixed but the software is not yet ready to be delivered as a final product.

Beta = All the main features of the game has been added, but there are most likely still a whole lot of bug and lots of minor features that are still to be added.
Alpha = All the main features of the game has NOT been added, and there are a whole lot of bugs. The game is most likely barely playable.

Alpha quality software has undergone only the most superficial of testing. It may contain known bugs, and almost certainly contains unknown bugs. Features intended for the final release may be incomplete or missing.
Beta is quality software has all features intended for final release. Generally, it will have fixed all known bugs, but sometimes it will allow bugs they consider minor to be in beta software. Beta software has been tested, but not extensively. It probably contains many bugs that have not discovered.
