Breeds don't matter, but cattitudes do, lol! But seriously, the best cat is one who walks over to you, nuzzles a bit, then purrs as you pet him or her. You can't go wrong! My Waffles and Columbus both met those criteria. I'm happy with them and like to think that they are happy with me.

There's no particular breed of cat that is the best, just a cat that's the best for you. And while there are certain characteristics that tend to go with different breeds (I think Persians tend to be fairly mellow; Siamese are often high-maintenance) and you would want to take that into consideration, you need to meet the individual cat and spend enough time with him to make sure your personalities mesh. Remember, too, that with a long haired cat like a Persian you'll have a huge time investment in combing out that fur every day!

I had an Abyssinian who was unbelievably needy (the opposite of the way people think cats are always aloof). I got her when she was 4, and she was sweet and quiet, but always insisted on being next to you. I couldn't take a bath without her being on the side of the tub.
My cats now are two mutts whose mother had them in a friend's garage. They're 2 years old but still unbelivably rowdy and chase each other contstantly, which is a problem in my small apartment. But they're still night and day different - the male is much more affectionate (to the point that it often gets annoying). His sister is just the opposite, pretty much takes care of herself. I actually kind of prefer her being around me to him, because she'll just quietly curl up on your feet. With him he keeps getting closer and closer to your face until he's almost sitting on it, will jump on the computer, etc.

I wouldn't want to deal with the long hair of a persian. Really, any 'ol cat will do. They each have their own personality, just like people. Siamese are extremely intelligent and friendlyy though.... they have the "look" of a persian sort of, but have short hair.
