It depends on a lot more than whether or not you simply play poker. Many people play poker or gamble in other ways consistently but they are very controlled and are not gambling addicts. Even if one plays poker every day, he may not be an addict if he is controlled and playing within his means. A gambling addict is one who is out of control and will not quit; he thinks that if he keeps playing he will get rich. He spends money that he cannot afford to spend, such as money for bills or food. He will leave his family and himself without financial resources because he is spending all that he has on chasing the "jackpot". A gambling addict will never, ever leave the poker table with a modest win, because he feels the need to pursue an even bigger win. If you enjoy poker, then just be sure that you budget how much money you can afford to lose and are willing to lose. Never make the mistake of thinking or believing that you will become rich. Play within your budget, and know when to walk away. If you are playing as a social activity, to be with friends and get some time out, it's OK. If you are playing because you feel that you "need to play", then you might have a problem. The first time that you overspend and end up losing money that you needed for something else you might want to really reconsider your habits.

I think if you bet your whole earnings and all your properties or you never get off your computer because of online poker, then yes, it makes you an addict. Any kind of gambling is addictive. It's your wanting to win, or win back what you lost or keep winning that makes it addictive. I guess, if you just consider it as a past time, nothing too serious, not something to get your child's tuition or anything from, then it could just be a good form of entertainment.

I totally disagree with you and your logic on this one. It's impossible for doing an act to make you an addict of that act--there has to be more going on than you just doing the act. The same goes for poker. Just because you play poker it doesn't automatically make you an addict.

Playing poker doesn't make you an addict.......What makes you an addict is when you have to play and bet more money than you can afford to lose....When you bet and lose every thing you own and can't feed your family or yourself then you need help and they have a lot of place you can go to get it...

Simply participating in any gambling event does not make you an addict. When you have to particpate, that you can't stop, that you keep going, that you bet money you can't afford to lose this makes you a gambling addict. When you have to play poker daily it could be a problem. I know of a man who played in a points game, this is a game that is for points only at a bar league, and not a game for money yet when he was knocked out of the Texas Hold Em tournament he tried to offer the director cash to get chips to get back into the game, this is then someone who has a gambling problem and needs to get help.

No. I play poker for money, free, stuff, tropheys or bragging rights. It is the competition. www.porkrind333.com
