Are there any doctors that make house calls anymore? If so where?
I haven't heard of any doing this.Do you think it would be a good thing for doctors to do?
Why do you think doctors quit making house calls?
I cared for my grandmother until she passed away.Getting her to the doctor was physically hard in the end.It would have been so helpful to have the Dr come to her home.
What are your thoughts on doctors visiting patients at home?

My general practice wont call out under normal circumstances as they no longer have the funding to do so. However saying that they still do home visits in certain circumstances. For example I had my youngest child at home and my own gp came to check her over the day after she was born. I think its a shame but I can understand there is alot of abuse to the system and unneccesary call outs which put a financial drain on the surgery finances.

Thank you for responding.
I should have clarified that. When I said house calls, I meant come to your home. House call is just what I have always heard it referred to.
But, now that you mentioned the actual calls - phone calls.I find it hard to get a doctor who will make a phone call.

The days of doctors making House Calls are long gone and the bottom line is the "bottom line". A doctor can see more billable patients in their office. The Bean Counters in doctors offices, I have heard it said, is that a doctor should spend no more than 5 to 10 minutes per patient...so that they can bill more patients per hour. It comes down to money, not health care.
When I was a kid growing up we had what was then referred to as a Family Doctor. I was born in 1930 and it was expected for the doctor to make a house call, but times have changed. Insurance companies entered the scene. I know different doctors who lost a lot of money to the HMO's failure to pay them.
I was talking to a friend recently who told me that she had gone to her doctor (a member in a big practice)who had covered some of the reasons for her visit and was ushering her out the door. My friend pulled out a sheet of paper and said , "But I still have some questions". She was told, "I'm sorry that is all the time I have for you today and my next patient is waiting" As I said, "Times have changed".

Oh my that is just horrible. I think I would have told that doctor, "sorry, but I have no more desire for you to my doctor either, maybe this will give you more time for others". Doctors only care about how much money they are taking home. Sad, so very sad.

I guess we are lucky. I live in Missouri and around here there are drs that make house calls. My children goes to a pediatric that makes house calls. We havent needed it. But they do. They charge a little extra for it. But in some cases it is well worth it. I have a friend who uses it for her children. She is pregnant, and on bedrest. Her husband works days so she is unable to take the children to the drs office. So they come to her. My grandmas dr also goes to her house sometimes. When I worked in healthcare I had a client who's dr came to her house to do certain things. I guess it may just be in certain areas.

I'm sure there are still some "Real" doctors that make house calls, but not in the big cities, it's all small town docs I'm sure. My question is, are there any true doctors left and if so where are they? Doctors are not what they used to be. It used to be that if you were sick and had no money it didn't matter, the doc would come visit you and care for you, and ask only for a home backed pie, or cake. Now if you are sick and need a doc you are asked, "can you pay"? And if you csannot pay, then "sorry, but we must have payment before we can make an appointment for you"! Health care is not about health care it is only about money! I think health care professionals should be renamed, health uncaring cleptos, LOL
