Yeah, the contact part is also important. I think they prefer to see more violence within their sports than real fair-play and sportsmanship. Thankfully with the whole wars going in the world nowadays, I believe that the desire for violence in sports will drop and americans will welcome more "friendly" sports, such as football.

Don't know but David Beckham signing for LA Galaxy might raise the profile of soccer (or real football!) in the US. American Football is quite popular in the UK too though. I've seen it on tv and have been to a couple of Scottish Claymores games but I just can't work out what they are doing!

I think a lot of it stems from soccer being thought of as a wimpy sport or something that isn't manly enough. I've been to a lot of soccer games that were intense. One of my favorite jokes is, "I went to a riot and a soccer game broke out"
Soccer is a great sport but I don't think Americans 'get it', maybe they need the rules explained to them. Football (American football that is) is very consuing to me and when someone stopped to explain how it works, it didn't help much LOL.

Well, I just think that americans are used to their popular sports by now for a long time and football only got across their side of the world later than usual, so it's just natural that it's not the most popular sport there by now. I do believe there's been attempts to make it grow anyways, like the 70's boom with american teams signing stars like Pelé or Eusébio, and also nowadays, with the good campaigns they've done at WC's (at least in 2002) and the well-structured MLS.

Football is more popular in the USA. The other countries don't have as advanced of basketball, football, and baseball leagues as we do. They only have that one big league for soccer. If the USA were to get any intrest here in the USA it would be very hard. They would need to do many things. I think they would need some longer hair, more tattoes, and a few brawls. (just kidding) Anyways if we weren't so big in all those other sports we'd have a chance. Just the fact that these sports along with the college level of these sports as well bring so much hype it would be hard for them all to follow yet another sport. I like soccer but many others think it's more of a less contact game.

The americans already have a lot of sports that they like and are good at such as american football, baseball and basketball. The only problem with these sports is that there are only a few countries who play them.
Soccer however is like a global language loads of people know how to play and most people enjoy playing it. The world cup is like a big global gathering with countries coming from all over the world to compete and share their passions with the other teams.
I think gradually though soccer will become more popular in america as the teams start to buy players from europe and will start to build a better national team.
