Please help with getting people to read discussions

February 4, 2007 5:53pm CST
Okay...I know i have just joined. But i am a little dismayed at the total apathy it seems so far to get people to read my discussions. I have posted them in "hot" areas, and have tried to make them detailed, concise, universal whilst remaining neutral at the same time. It is a little odd that someone can join the site and be a member for several hours and get 12 responses, when i havent even reached that yet! I have also managed to scrap 43/100 for reputation...and although i have been reading and replyng, I dont think i have done anything else overlty extraordinary. So what gives? Dont mean to complain about the site, just trying to get a better understanding and hopefully appreiciaton of the site.

As members told me when I first started, you must be patient. And I would think, "If I would have wanted 'patients' I would have been a doctor and had a waiting room full of them!" It will come in time. Be natural, be yourself, post from the heart, don't post silly things such as what is ur fav colr? do u lik chetrz? You appear to be an adult with adult conversations to start, so start them. I would appreciate it if you would explain to me what 43/100 reputation means. I have no clue of what you are talking about there; but then again, no one has ever really told me about what the stars above our heads mean either. Don't despair, don't give up, and lots of luck ~Donna

Well, you should know...that all this is a kind of group work among the lotters. You see, i've always noticed that even the silliest discussuion gets a good response(usually like 30-80) just because that person has a lot of people he/she knows on MyLot. While this is happening, people who have few connection on MyLot, gets poor response for even FAB! discussions! And the best way to keep people to visit and checkout your discussions is to keep posting comments and rate them. So, unless your topic is SUPER good, you'll just get a couple or so of responses. The best way the solve this is to get a friend of yours here. And post a bit of a GENERAL topic...so that people can understand and reply. Another tip is to intend your discussions. They seem kind of cramped and people wouldn't prefer to read them. Put enough space around and keep the grammar correct. Personal feelings and experiences usually provoke answers from mylotters. So keep the topic as original as possible. It's good to ask questions like 'What should i do...' or the kind. I've accidently found this out. Anyway, as long as the topic is GENERAL and not related with law and order and books and stuff, i think you can invite me to comment on them (i think there's an option like that somewhere.) I would be happy to. Invite a few friends who you KNOW personally and also know what their intrests are. I mean it would be strange to invite a person to comment on a topic 'Chinese Legal History' or 'Jurisprudence', who isn't a judge or something. Anyway, Good Luck on your search for answers!

MyLot is not just about starting discussion, but also responding to discussions as well, to do well, you need to respond to many discussions started by other people, and give them reasoned arguments for your response, even if you disagree with them, and you should have a minimum of several lines in your responce, all of which mut be relevant. You should also rate the discussions that you read, with - being reserved for very poor responses or ones with only a few words. ! should be reserved for members abusing either MyLot or MyLot members. At some point members will start to notice you and may then read your own discussions. Having friends helps as well, however you will find that not many of them will read your discussions. I have around 40-45 friends, and the average number of members who respond to my discussions is less than 10, while I would be happy to get more responses, it doesn't unduly bother me that I don't.

Other thing which I neglected to mention is that you should respond to some of the people who respond to your discussions, and rate them as well, not replying to them will upset some people, and they will stop responding to you, after all a discussion is more than just a few lines of text.

u ll only get the readers attention if the topic heading is catchy!!! pple usually dont hav tym and energy to read every topic in depth (not unless they are ur best frends) so they just surf through all the topic n answer the one wich they relate too...or can answer...!! and open the topic (to read further) only the ones wich catches their attention!! so try posting something interesting and arguable...or altlest that applys to every1!!....not lik the blade topic...wat is it about anyway??!! cheerz ^_^

I have this problem also, tha's why I had kind of given up with mylot but decided to go back to it today because Ive been missing it. Ive no idea how some people get so many responses, I think my most is like 16 or something. I think friens is the key.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I was posting discussions when I first joined which were not getting any responses and I thought they were "hot topics". Then suddenly a week or two ago a random discussion I posted got over 80 responses. Just be patient, the discussions you have posted might be ones that others have already done in the past so many members are not replying. Also the more friends you have the more people will see your discussion. I suggest read around the site, don't just add people as friends randomly, add people who have similar interests as you, as they are more likely to want to respond to your discussions. Good luck. x
