If you want the greatest inform of guitar players then there are two that enter my mind which many of you, I'm sure, have never heard of. The first is a Spanish classical guitarist named Andre Segovia. The Second is Les Paul. He was the innovator of the solid body electric guitar and was also the first to use multi track recording. In the 1950's he and his vocalist wife Mary had 2 records that sold over 2 million copies. The Les Paul Model of the Gibson guitar (inovated by Les Paul) has been the driving force behind many changes in popular music. It powered the blues rock sound of the late '60s and the southern rock of the late '70s. By the '90's it was providing signature sounds for every genre of rock, from alternative to metal. He not only was the greatest of his time...I feel that many of the guitarist with any smarts would take their hats off to him.

Virtuoso players like vai satriani are obvious choices...But i love others whose improvised on their on techniques like Eric Mongrain , Justin king , tommy emmanuel etc etc
