Who isn’t superstitious? Don’t we stop when a cat cuts the road? Doesn’t Umpire Shepherd tap his ankle when the score is 111? We all are. But it’s no harm as long as we get what we want.
WHAT IS SUPERSTITION? A person always believes what he or she wants to believe. You cannot change the thinking of an individual. Only the way of thinking can be changed. Crossing the road after a black cat has crossed your path doesn’t mean that you would have bad luck or you would face an accident or should wait for a white cat to cross over. It’s just that because of superstitions, beliefs and the stories we have heard, we become a bit more anxious, cautious and in that process we tend to commit small errors and mistakes that make us more inclined towards the word superstition, also increasing our belief in that particular incident.
Many of us would be wearing a bracelet, black or red thread, a taviz, necklace, mala, ring etc or carrying a lucky charm, which makes us more confident and when we fair good or get the desired result, we give all the credit to them. It may be a coincidence or pure luck, but still like I said all credit goes to them. Even a particular shirt, wristband, cap, jeans can bring good luck. Remember Australian Captain Steve Waugh and his lucky cap. He never used to take it off no matter how old it was or only he knows how many times he had to get it stitched.
Why Horse Shoe is a lucky charm?
Horseshoes are nailed above the doorway or carried along as a lucky charm. The horseshoe resembles the crescent moon or sacred shape of pagan moon goddess and so invites their protection. The seven nail holes in a horseshoe invokes the traditionally lucky number 7. Smithing is considered to be a lucky profession and horseshoes are associated with blacksmiths. People even believe that horseshoes can cure hiccups.
Why not to light 3 cigarettees with 1 matchstick?
Lightnening three cigarettees with one matchstick is considered unlucky. It is believed that during the 1st World war, there was this superstition that if three soldiers lit their cigarettes from the same matchstick, they gave away ample time and light to the enemies to shoot. When the first cigarrette is lighted, the light is seen, on the second, the aim is taken and on the third, the trigger goes, thus killing the soldier.
Why 7 is considered to be the lucky number?
It is the perfect number(3+4=7) the triangle (3) and the square (4) are the perfect figures. The sun was the greatest planet of the ancient seven planets, then the moon which changed its spleandour every seventh day.
Why 13 is considered to be the unlucky number?
According to a mythology, if 13 people sat down at a table, that was very unlucky. (Why? At a banquet of 12 people in Valhalla, an intruder — number 13 — caused the death of Balder’s son Odin).
The number of people at the last supper of Christ and the 12 Apostles confirmed the superstition about the number 13.
Why 9 is a mystical number?
A belief is that a man is a full chord, or eight notes and deity comes next. Three, being Trinity, represents a perfect unity. Twice 3 is a perfect dual, and 3 times 3 is a perfect plural. Thus 9 is considered to be a mystical number.
Why to Touch Wood or Knock Wood?
There’s a belief that the knocking sound prevents the evil spirits from hearing your unwanted, self-boasting comments and remarks. By touching the wood, you ward off the evil consequences.
Why Rabbit’s foot is considered as a Lucky charm?
The rabbit foot began its lucky trend because of the rabbit’s ability to reproduce; the rabbit’s foot became a symbol of fertility. The left hind foot is considered a powerful charm against evil because of the rabbit’s strong hind legs.
It is also believed that a newborn baby, if rubbed with a rabbit’s foot, he would be lucky for his whole long life.
Never leave a rocking chair rocking empty. Why?
If you leave the chair empty, you are inviting evil spirits to come into your house and go for a joy ride. We would definetly not want the devil to rock in our house.
Why is it considered unlucky if a black cat crossed the road or path?
Black cats are familiar/linked to witches and if you crossed the road after it did, the witches are keeping an eye on you and maybe you would have to face her curse.
Why never walk underneath a ladder?
Its believed that the ladder and the floor or wall it is leaning against form a triangle which is belived resembles the triangle formed between “the father the ghost and the holy spirit”. So if anyone walks under this they break the holy plane and thus become unlucky.
Similarly, 786 is considered to be a lucky or sacred number by the Muslims,13th on Fridays is considered unlucky, 11/21/51/101, etc is auspicious (ending in 1). If a mirror is broken, it’s considered inauspicious, if a glass is broken it’s auspicious, if gold is lost it’s not good, black colour symbolises death, 111/222/333 are considered unlucky numbers (Umpire David Shepherd tapping his ankle three times on the cricket ground), a tiger nail, number 4 symbolises death in Japan, god bless you when one sneezes…etc. People even pay a hefty amount just to get their lucky number for their cars or vehicles. One even pays handsomely for getting a premium number for the mobile phone.
There are many such things which everyone is aware of but very few know the answers to them. Even I was not aware of these things until I read them or heard from different people. I guess everyone must be having something or the other which they consider lucky, which increases their confidence and gives them the moral boost they need. Many people might have heard about a lot many superstitious beliefs which they might be following and must have worked wonders for them. But what’s wrong in that as long as one is happy and gets what he or she wants or desires all because of the lucky charm or the number!!
