Your middle name

In soaps in the UK a sort of tradition has grown up that characters who may have perfectly normal, everyday names have an old fashioned, embarrassing name. This middle name usually becomes evident during wedding scenes, where the revelation of the middle name causes a moment of light humour. Do you have a middle name which is totally different in nature from your first name, and does it embarrass you?

I go by my middle name so that is not the problem. It is my first name I don't like.

lolol you have to be different! Is it is a bigger problem for you to hide your first name, as I thought that was the one that all officialdom blazed across documents?

Yes I sympathise. It is very aggravating to build up your cred and then have a receptionist ruin it by Hermoine Gingersnap Honeypot Grace lol. I tried to pick names nobody has to prove my point but I bet I still get flamed by somebody who really has those names and loves them lol.

Oh yeah, at every doctor's office and every class I attended at college, they always called me by my first name. Most official documents I use my first initial and my middle name in the first name spot. Sometimes though, that doesn't work.

No, I didn't want to know your names, just whether you were embarrassed by your middle name and tried to keep it a secret lol.

Yes I do and no I am not saying as I totally hate it. I do not know why I had to be given a middle Name, I only need one Name. But I thought if I had to have 2 names, then my Kids would to and I chose nice Names for them.

My middle name is Mae. It's not embarassing, but you'd be suprised how many teachers told me I didn't know how to spell my own name. I actually got into an arguement & sent to the office once because I wouldn't back down over this.

Oh, that must have been very annoying! Did this make your parents angry too, after all they were the ones who chose your name, and the name on your birth certificate is not subject to the spelling of teachers, is it.

That is a lovely variation of Edward, I like that very much, it is very regal. To be holy as well is very nice for you. Thank you for this post, I learned a new name today.

Ah, yes! Nobody can spell either of my names and there are about twenty spellings of my surname, so far, from the mail I receive lol. Do you find that you have problems with hospital appointments etc because they got your name wrong again?

So you at least got a middle name that you liked, which is nice for you. An unusual name as well, a talking point if yuo ever need one, really.

Yes I certainly have! My first name is ok but I hate my middle name. Never use it nor do I use my middle initial which is E because then people are likely to ask what the E stands for. Apparently my parents got my middle name from the midwife who delivered me - they had made up their mind before they heard it that they would call me after her. Idiots!

oooooooooooooooh lol. What a dilemna, upset the midwife of upset the baby! Forgetting of course that the baby would grow up and be around a little bit more often than the midwife! At least you got lucky in that it is the middle name and not the first one, but I don't suppose that is a compensation when you absolutely have to reveal it.

My middle name is Alan which is not out of the ordinary and does not embarrass me. However, I have had some students with unusual middle names that are the names of some long ago relative.

so although you are happy with your names you can understand where this discussion is coming from. It seems to be such a national pastime in the UK to lumber your children with terrible middle names that all the soaps and comedies capitalise on it!

Yes you are lucky to have a nice middle name. A lot of my friends have been given middle names they absolutely hate and they are definitely open to blackmail when we enter a busy restaurant. You know, the usual "who is going to queue at the bar" routine. Quietly say their middle name and they are off like a rabbit before you shout it lol.

My middle name comes from the song "Charmaine", but I always got kidded while growing up.."Don't squeeze the Charmin." (which is the name of a toilet paper)
