Can we relay to RATS?

As I read on new researches for cures and new medical discoveries.. I come across several researches that says, studies they made are done by experimenting and injecting certain chemicals to rats. How reliable are these researches and experiments? What if certain reaction may not happen to rats but may be critical for human? What kind of rats are used in these experiments?

The researchers of modern days make the trial first on animals and on permission they put it on trial with human beings.
But the modern days research is not reliable as at the end everyone escapes with a dictate that"though all the precautions are taken,the reliability is not assured".
